چکیده

Let k be a number field, Ok its ring of integers, and f(t,X) ∈ k(t)[X] be an irreducible polynomial. Hilbert’s irreducibility theorem gives infinitely many integral specializations t 7→ t̄ ∈ Ok such that f(t̄, X) is still irreducible. In this paper we study the set Redf (Ok) of those t̄ ∈ Ok with f(t̄, X) reducible. We show that Redf (Ok) is a finite set under rather weak assumptions. In particular, several results of K. Langmann in [Lan90], [Lan94], and [Lan00], obtained by Diophantine approximation techniques, appear as special cases of some of our results. Our method is completely different. We use elementary group theory, valuation theory, and Siegel’s theorem about integral points on algebraic curves. Indeed, using the Siegel-Lang extension of Siegel’s theorem, most of our results hold over more general fields.

Hilbert’s Irreducibility Theorem and the Larger Sieve

We describe an explicit version of Hilbert’s irreducibility theorem using a generalization of Gallagher’s larger sieve. We give applications to the Galois theory of random polynomials, and to the images of the adelic representation associated to elliptic curves varying in rational families.

On Hilbert’s Irreducibility Theorem

In this paper we obtain new quantitative forms of Hilbert’s Irreducibility Theorem. In particular, we show that if f(X,T1, . . . , Ts) is an irreducible polynomial with integer coefficients, having Galois group G over the function field Q(T1, . . . , Ts), and K is any subgroup of G, then there are at most Of,ε(H s−1+|G/K|+ε) specialisations t ∈ Zs with |t| ≤ H such that the resulting polynomial...

Hilbert ’ s irreducibility theorem , and integral points of bounded degree on curves par Aaron LEVIN

We study the problem of constructing and enumerating, for any integers m,n > 1, number fields of degree n whose ideal class groups have “large” m-rank. Our technique relies fundamentally on Hilbert’s irreducibility theorem and results on integral points of bounded degree on curves.

Some Remarks on the Jacobian Conjecture and Connections with Hilbert’s Irreducibility Theorem

We have two main results. 1. Let P : Kn → Kn be a polynomial map with constant nonzero Jacobian, where K is any extension of Q. Then, P has a polynomial inverse if and only if the range of P contains a cartesian product of n universal Hilbert sets. 2. Let P : K → K be a polynomial map with constant nonzero Jacobian, where K is an algebraic number field. Then, P is invertible for “almost all” ra...

The Inverse Galois Problem, Hilbertian Fields, and Hilbert’s Irreducibility Theorem

In the study of Galois theory, after computing a few Galois groups of a given field, it is very natural to ask the question of whether or not every finite group can appear as a Galois group for that particular field. This question was first studied in depth by David Hilbert, and since then it has become known as the Inverse Galois Problem. It is usually posed as which groups appear as Galois ex...
